After much prayer and planning, Grace Church began in March 2006 with a core team of sixteen. The vision and passion was to reach Halewood with the gospel and win people to Christ through relationship evangelism. A local believer longed that one day it would be said, “Halewood, oh that’s that godly place”.
Over many years, God has been very gracious to us!
Within eight months we stepped out in faith and constituted as an independent local church with about thirty-five founding members, calling a pastor, appointing an elder and associating ourselves with both the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) and North West Partnership. Initially we met in the Halewood Women’s Institute, which we soon outgrew. With no larger halls available, we considered dividing the congregation up to meet in different homes around Halewood at various times each Sunday, with the elders going around these venues, leading worship and preaching. However, in an amazing way, God opened the door to hire Halewood Leisure Centre and we moved there on our first anniversary Sunday.
In the following years Grace continued to grow. New ministries commenced led by committed leaders and served by valued team members. We were also able to increase the eldership, appoint deacons, train apprentices and over time develop a small staff team.
Many families moved into Halewood and involved themselves in local schools and community initiatives, making friendships and building gospel bridges. Others travel into Halewood and serve locally, for which we thank God. There have been many opportunities to interact with the community – running ‘The Hub’ gift and coffee shop for nearly three years, being heavily involved in five Halewood Festivals, hosting Community meals, organising annual Community Carol Services, taking part in several community projects in New Hutte, as well as making personal connections through Safe Families. We have run (and continue to run) regular courses such as Christianity Explored, where many engage with the gospel and some have come to faith – for which we thank God.
Many people have completed training courses with the North West Partnership and others have completed training courses with Oak Hill and WEST Bible Colleges. A number of our original young people have gone to serve in other churches and gospel ministries across the country. What an encouragement!
We continue to serve within the community, seeking to glorify God, equip believers and make disciples of Jesus in this local area. Read more of what we are doing currently on the website – and why not come and be a part of our story!
